Left & Right Formulas

If you have cells that contain a certain amount of data and you’re only looking for certain portions of it, one method you can use involves the =LEFT and =RIGHT formulas. They’re simpler than trying to go through and use Copy & Paste. Let’s see how they work. If you have any questions, as always, feel free to email us at questions@pbttinfo.com.

1. Let’s start with an example below that is a spreadsheet in which cell A4 contains “ABCD1234”:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2. If you want to capture just the first four characters, you would use a =left function like the one shown below, where in =left(A4,4), A4 is the original data-containing cell and 4 is the number of characters you’d like to show:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

3. And here is the result – the first (left-hand) 4 characters from cell A4:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

4. Now, if you want to do the same for the right four (4) characters, you guessed it! The formula looks like this:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

5. And here is the result, much like the previous example:
